Tom Morris' Retirement
September 18, 2007, St. Andrews, Scotland
Co-workers and Friends,

Sadly for all of us, Old Tom has chosen to hang it up after fifty five years as a fixture here around the Old Course and the Old Course Hotel. For those of us that have been touched by this man's kindness, wit, wisdom and charm, words cannot express how he will be missed. Once, after tipping a pint or two down at The Dunvegan one evening a few years ago, he let something slip which I have not forgotten and leads me to my point in contacting you. Old Tom told me that he truly believed the links at Pebble Beach to be a kindred spirit to his first love, The Old Course here at St. Andrews. In addition, he said that he considered the short, par-three seventh to be the absolute heart and soul of the course. With more than just a touch of sadness in his eyes, he said that he was afraid he would never get to gaze upon the hole in person during his lifetime and would consider that a great regret. While we may not be able to send him to America as a retirement gift, I am hoping that you will contribute what you can toward the purchase of this beautiful painting of the 7th at Pebble. I know it will warm Old Tom's heart for many years to come. Contributors will be acknowledged handsomely, on the back of the actual piece itself.
